I love history. So much so that I studied it for three years at university. So much so that I would go so far as to say that everyone should study history until they’re 16 (fight me).

A lot of my reasoning behind that was because without an understanding of our past, we often let the worst parts of “hIstORy RepeAT iTselF”. And to be honest, at a time when the West seems to be sliding into fascism and raising a Nazi salute is somehow not taboo anymore, it feels like the statement rings true.

However, this article reminded me of the important caveat of looking at one’s past and applying whatever lessons are derived from it blindly without situating oneself in your new context.
